I don't get it...

How did Tom Cruise go from one of the biggest, most-loved movie stars on the planet to one of the most hated and ridiculed? I understand that the scientology stuff is weird, but hasn't he been a scientologist for years now? Did the jumping-on-Oprah's-couch thing really spark this whole thing? Why? If Julia Roberts had jumped on Oprah's couch yelling how much she loved James Van Der Beek, would it have had the same negative affect?

I think it's the couch jumping plus many other things: the scientology conversion campaign during the war of the worlds promo tour (something he never really did in promoting any of his other films as far as I can tell), Brook Sheilds attack, the nutty matt lauer doesn't know anything about psychology rant, the alleged threats against South Park, etc. The fact that Holmes joined scientology so quickly has caused some scrutiny on the religion itself which shows some things many people don't understand or think is wierd; 'silent births' and 'eating the placentia'? I would agree that the negative press is over the top but some of these wounds are self inflicted. In the long run, I'm not sure this effects his box office draw, do you? Whose going to say "I'm not going to see MI3 because he believes that Xenu is an alien ruler of the "Galactic Confederacy" who, 75 million years ago, brought billions of people to Earth, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs."? Now that I think about it, maybe promoting Scientology during the war of the worlds was appropriate...At any rate, I'm going to see it and any other movie he makes that looks good regardless of his beliefs. I think most people probably feel the same way despite some of these media attacks...

I feel like by the time he did all of those things though, that the ball was already rolling and had gained a lot of momentum. I dunno. I didn't know what Scientologists believed though. That sounds like something I might want to check out next time they offer me a free "stress test."

For me, going on the Today show and calling sweet & loveable Matt Lauer GLIB and insisting that Brooke Shields and her post-partumness was a B.S. thing and then telling the millions of us battling depression that it isn't real.

Yes, he's always been a scientologist but did you know so is Brandy? So is Leah Remini? Do they rub it in our faces? Does anyone even know what religion Julia Roberts IS?

I'm not arguing that as an actor he has value but as a person, he basically means nothing to me now.
